John Fairbrass

Director, Head of Programmes and Outdoor Adventures

Background

At heart, I am a Programme Manager who relishes delivering successful programmes, that not only exceed budget, quality and time requirements, but also ‘grow’ the individual and harnesses the ‘collective brilliance’ of the wider team. I am also an executive and board-level coach, focusing on individual and team development. I support leaders to develop their skills and their teams to drive transformation and enhance business performance. My particular area of interest is in building resilience; understanding how to maintain self and team performance in an often complex, ambiguous and matrix environment with unaligned objectives and confusing priorities. I have a wealth of experience, and mentor leaders who operate in complex environments and need to ensure solid commercial profitability whilst maintaining positive stakeholder and board level engagement.

After 16 years as a Royal Navy Officer and 14 years as a Senior Business Director in a blue chip, Finnish Telecoms company, with direct operational responsibility for the delivery of multi £100m+ programmes; John has left the embrace of the Military/Corporate enclave and is now able to spend his time nurturing his own fledgling outdoor adventure business.
A qualified military Unit Expedition Leader, he has led or been involved in diving and mountaineering expeditions all over the world, including South America, the Far East, the Pyrenees, Dolomites, Alps and High Atlas and of course, widely in Wales, Scotland and the Lakes. To recover from his recent second hip replacement surgery, John is currently in training to complete a Lands End to John O’Groats via 3 peaks challenge, and is working toward his International Mountain Leader qualification.
His company, Wide Blue Yonder was set up with the aim of introducing young adults, families, adventurous seniors and the less able to the excitement and adrenalin of mountain, lake and river activity. Whilst challenging and never entirely risk free – all Wide Blue Yonder activities are carried out with the utmost attention to safety and individual ability. Wide Blue Yonder has an environmental and sustainable resonance; it operates entirely with local specialist, insured and qualified mountain and adventurous activity instructors and has established strong links with local campsites, restaurants, hostels, hotels and food markets.
John brings to TrafalgarPD not only his vast experience of the complex leadership and operational pressures demanded in today’s corporate environment, and how to deal with the associated extremes of stress and expectation, but also an understanding of how to achieve whole life fulfillment and balance that with corporate success. In both his personal and business life, John has dealt with failure and outstanding success, and believes both those two imposters need to be met with the same attributes of resilience, confidence and humility. After all, only you know how genuinely good you really are. John has a challenging coaching style – delivered with an expectation that each individual wants to achieve his or her maximum potential and is prepared to commit to an ambitious, yet achievable time bound plan that enhances self belief, stretches horizons and delivers tangible results.
